Birds Of A Feather

This Spring you have your pick of the most glamorous and avant grade fashions. Among them is a trend that is sure to make you swoon – feathers. Feathers are everywhere and if you haven’t given into the temptation yet, the designers are coming up with new and creative ways of enticing you to incorporate “bird chic” into your wardrobe.

My love for bird inspired garments began a couple of years ago when I spotted the most gorgeous brown Elie Tahari feather gown with a lace underlay. It was love at first site and I without a doubt had to have this dress. And what a great buy it turned out to be – it has been a staple in my closet ever since. (See for yourself, to the left).

Then a few years later the Sex and the City movie came out and Carrie wore something that I thought was over the top even for her. The feather hat that she donned in the wedding scene was simply horrendous. I’ve always loved Carrie but her feather accessory scared me and almost made me avoid feathers all together. Until this Spring that is. Now, feathers are more accessible than ever and I’ve got you covered with the most wanted feather essentials.

Feather Extensions

Love them or hate them, the undeniable truth is that feather extensions are a unique way to add pizazz to a look. I personally cannot see myself getting them done, but if I were to ever change my mind, I would be partial to the natural feather look. I like that they compliment all hair colors well.

If you’ve been seeing these around and have been wondering how it works, here’s the scoop: To start the process, find a salon near you that works with feather extensions, have them show you their selection of feather colors and lengths and have a professional set them for you. You can select what part of your hair you want them in and how many you would like. The entire process takes no longer than 10 minutes. The beauty of this accessory is that you can still wash and blow dry your hair and the extensions will last for over a month.

Feather Hair Accessories
This is where the fun begins. If feather extensions are too much of a commitment, find the perfect feather hairaccessory. This fun and edgy barrette was all the rage at Paris fashion week, worn by Chanel models over long straight ponytails.

It’s price? An astronomical $2,5oo since it’s handmade by Karl Lagerfeld himself. But if you are a fan and have time for a trip to the arts and crafts store, this accessory can be yours. It is easily replicated, plus you’ll have a fun project on your hands.

Feathers For Your Purse

Want to wear feathers but don’t know where to begin? Why not indulge in a hayden-harnett feather charm for your purse. Nothing adds whimsy to a bag like a feather charm and there are lots to choose from so there’s bound to be one that matches your personality. I personally like them because I think of them as jewelry for your bag helping it look different with every wear. These charms range in price from $130 and up and make a terrific gift.

Feather Prints
ALICE by Temperley Feather DressAnother popular way to pluck away at this trend is by wearing feather prints. I talked about florals and leopards before, but this design is exceptional. It’s Native American meets girly and the outcome is nothing short of romantic. This delicate and feminine silhouette Tilo Feather Print Scarfis definitely one to try. My favorite is this beautiful ALICE by Temperley Feather Dress. The style of the dress is flattering and has an ethereal feel to it. But flock to the stores soon to get your “bird chic” look because this trend is flying off the shelves.

If you’re looking for a little feather print accent piece, don’t overlook peacock feathers. When I was a little girl, I used to love collecting peacock feathers. What a treat it is now to be able to actually wear them. I found this great scarf by Tilo for only $140. It’s light weight and great to make a statement with this Spring and Summer.

Feather Garments
Alice + Olivia Kae Feather SkirtWhen I think of feathered garments, I think Boho Chic. So even though designers like Sue Wong have been making splendid feather gowns for years, I was looking for something more unique this season. And I found it!

I couldn’t resist posting this great leopard + feather skirt. Talk about killing two birds with one stone. Hopefully this isn’t how you obtain your feathers. Alice+Olivia who has been one of my go-to brands for years, have really outdone themselves with this Kae Feather Skirt. Dress it up with a blouse or simply wear it with a tank, this skirt will be a show stopper.

It’s like they say, birds of a feather stick together. Let fashion be your bond with your friends. Go to the mall for a little retail therapy together. Happy Shopping Ladies!
